Authentic Relating – what is it and how is it different from other relational practices?

Authentic Relating develops more real human contact through simple, structured practices rather than leaving people inside an undefined process.

In one sentence

Authentic Relating is a set of structured relational practices that use games, agreements and exercises to help people move into more real contact here and now.

What is Authentic Relating?

Authentic Relating brings together presence, honesty, feedback and contact with lived experience inside clear relational containers. The point is not to be unfiltered, but to create conditions in which more real meeting becomes easier.

Its core is not one single technique, but a family of games, agreements and structures that help people move from surface-level conversation into stronger contact, more self-awareness and more responsible communication.

What does Authentic Relating look like?

Meetings usually begin with a simple landing into body and present moment, then move into games and exercises in dyads, triads or the whole group.

Participants work with questions, feedback, noticing impact, distinguishing data from interpretation and expressing their own experience in contact.

Facilitation provides agreements and pacing so the practice stays readable and safe while still centering real interaction between people.

Core features

Structure

Games and agreements create a container that makes real contact easier without needing to improvise everything from scratch.

Present-moment contact

The practice keeps returning to what is happening now instead of staying only in stories about relationship.

Feedback

Impact is used to deepen contact and awareness rather than merely evaluate another person.

Accessibility

Well-designed forms help people begin even when they are new to speaking from experience and being seen in relationship.

Transferability

Many tools transfer relatively easily into friendships, work, partnership and community life.

Who is Authentic Relating for?

For people who want deeper contact without starting with the highest level of intensity.

For facilitators, coaches, community leaders and anyone working relationally.

For people wanting more presence, honesty and embodiment in communication.

FAQ

Is Authentic Relating a good first relational workshop?

Usually yes. It is one of the most accessible entry points in the field because the structures are clear, the exercises are shorter, and the level of closeness and honesty tends to build gradually.

What does a first Authentic Relating session usually look like?

Usually it includes a sequence of simple games and exercises in pairs, triads or small groups. There is often some attention to body and present-moment experience, some direct sharing, and a few moments of reflection on what felt alive or surprising.

What sets Authentic Relating apart from the other practices on this site?

Authentic Relating usually has the broadest range of light and medium-depth formats. It is easier to enter without much prior experience, and many of its tools transfer quickly into everyday conversations, partnership and team life.
