Authentic Relating Games

Hot Seat

One person sits in focus while others respond to prompts, share impacts or ask questions inside a clear structure. It can create striking intimacy and insight very quickly.

Hot Seat

A simple sample of what this game can sound like in practice.

Person in focus

The edge I want support with is the fear that everyone sees how hard I am trying.

Facilitator

Good. Group, stay with that one edge and keep each share to one sentence.

Set up

Name strong agreements before starting: the person in focus chooses the edge, the facilitator decides pace and who speaks, consent can be revoked, and integration is part of the exercise.

A simple flow

  1. One participant chooses to be in focus and names what edge or area they want explored.
  2. The facilitator invites one kind of contact at a time, for example impact, a question, or silence, and regulates the pace of responses from the group.
  3. The person in focus tracks what lands, what does not, and what kind of support or pacing they want more or less of.
  4. Close with grounding and a short integration round so the person is not left open and flooded.

Prompts to use

  • “What edge do you want support exploring right now?”
  • “What happens when you hear that impact from the group?”
  • “What kind of contact do you want more of right now?”

What to watch for

  • Escalating intensity because the group is fascinated by emotion.
  • Too many voices too quickly for the person in focus to metabolize.
  • Advice, interpretation, or spectacle disguised as impact.

Good variations

  • Use a quieter version where only the facilitator and one other participant respond, rather than the whole group.
  • Limit every group share to one sentence so the hot seat stays digestible.
